DEXIS CariVu™ is a compact, portable caries detection device that uses patented transillumination technology to support the identification of occlusal, interproximal and recurrent carious lesions and cracks. Similar in appearance, DEXIS CariVu images read like familiar X-ray images — lesions will appear as dark areas. This provides an edge over fluorescent imaging technologies in that there is no need to clean the tooth of bacteria, calibrate the device or become versed in the meaning of multiple color codes or numeric indicators. CariVu is also helpful for monitoring suspicious areas between routine exams. CariVu has a very high detection accuracy, with a study showing an interproximal dentin caries detection rate of 99%.
It can let dental clinicians easily detect a range of carious lesions and cracks, plus it provides an easy-to-interpret image that is stored with the patient’s additional images. CariVu can offer even more information for documentation and education, and can help patients better understand their treatment. It is also an alternative diagnostic method with which patients can be comfortable, if they refuse or dislike traditional x-rays.
The American Dental Association cites that clinicians can lower radiation exposure to their patients between 40-60 percent, depending upon the system.
